Fukuzawa Yukichi (1835-1901) was perhaps the most influential man in the formation of Japan's entry into the modern world.
Living through the turbulent era of the downfall of the Tokugawa, this film puts you right beside him, seeing the bloody battles that brought about the end of the Shogunate. While still a samurai Fukuzawa boarded the ship Kanrin-maru for the famed trip to America in 1860.
As a representative of the Shogunate, he was widely respected and many photographs were taken of him at the time. Among his many achievements he was an author, educator, translator, entrepreneur, political theorist, and founder of Keio University.
