Forced into poverty by the strict rules of protocol that governed the samurai era, Iemon's realizes that it is almost impossible to attain status without having the means to bribe those with the power to make or break a career. Things change when the beautiful daughter of a powerful retainer falls in love with Iemon after he rescues her from a terrible fate.
However, fate is a fickle thing that may come back with tragic results. The tension builds to breaking point in this magnificent version of the classic tale based on the renowned Kabuki by Chikamatsu Monzaemon.
