Emblem of A Man
Director: Yukiko Todoroki
Cast: Hideki Takahashi, Akinori Matsuo

Otoko-no Monsho (The Symbol of a Man) is a 1963 Japanese film starring Hideki Takahashi as Ryuji, a Doctor in the Manchurian border region of China during the 1930s, forced by circumstances to take control of the powerful Ohshima contracting company. As part of the succession process Ryuji has his back tattooed with the same design as that of his murdered father, who told him that the tattoo is the “symbol of a man”.

This film has been compared frequently to Francis Coppola's much later "The Godfather", and the comparison is an excellent one. Takahashi's character shares much with Pacino's Michael, and both films benefit from a heavily emotional, operatic mood. Nikkatsu had a bona fide hit on their hands, and Hideki had found his niche.
