Matatabi follows the fluctuating fortunes of three friends in feudal Japan who are “Tosei-nin,” (Wandering gamblers) that rove from place to place, selling their services to whichever boss will fill their rice bowls. They adhere to the yakuza code, which differs only slightly from Bushido (Way of Samurai). Their lives are always on the line for their employer as they grit
their teeth when tragedy strikes. This highly entertaining movie is considered one of the great classics of Japanese cinema and is filmmaker Ichikawa Kon’s masterpiece.
