Ipponmatsu, a Yakuza (wandering gambler), and Kuroki, a Samurai meet by accident. Both men are on a quest. Ipponmatsu seeks the murderer of his father who was brutally slain by a sword wielding samurai at Sasago Pass five years earlier.
The killer has eluded the authorities after robbing an envoy of 4,000 Ryo and leaving five dead guards at the side of the road. The main suspect is the missing sixth guard Yaichiro. Kuroki, the son of Yaichiro, is out to clear his father's name.
Tension and hatred begin to build in Ipponmatsu as he travels with Kuroki, the son of the man whom he believes killed his father. When they lay-over in a small coastal village Ipponmatsu discovers that the local Yakuza boss had suddenly become wealthy at the time of his father's death. As he investigates this tale he discovers that there's a power behind the scenes, and an even shadowier figure behind him.
