Due to superstition identical twin baby girls are separated at birth, with one being left in front of a prosperous wholesaler of traditional cloth where she is adopted. The other grows up in a cedar growing village in the local mountains. They meet by chance years later at the Gion Festival in Kyoto. The film follows their relationship as now mature sisters, as it develops from this first meeting. Issues of class and identity are central to the story and love interests play their part as well.
