This film stars the brilliant Tatsuya Nakadai as an aging ronin (masterless samurai) who seeks to commit seppuku (also called "harakiri" or ritual disembowelment) in the house of a warlord. However, his true intent is gradually revealed as the story unfolds, building to a slam-bang action climax.
It's a tragic tale of revenge that uncovers the hypocrisy of 17th century feudal Japan, focusing on the Samurai family destroyed by a clan that symbolizes the cruel behavior of the period.
