As the nineteenth century comes to a close in Tokyo, an ancient Hajime Saito (Koichi Sato) finds himself wandering alleys in the Japanese capital in search of medical attention for his seriously ill grandson.
He finds Chiaki Ono—a doctor who has been putting the finishing touches on a professional relocation to Manchuria. After some initial hesitation, Ono agrees to assist the old man.
As Saito waits for his grandson's convalescence, the old man comes across a picture of another warrior acquaintance from Saito's past which prompts a torrent of flashback memories to some 40 years ago when both men were compatriots and rivals in the last battle of the Shinsen-gumi.
When the Last Sword is Drawn, based on the novel by Jiro Asada, was the closing film at the 2002 Tokyo International Film Festival.
