Judo Saga 2
Director: Akira Kurosawa
STARRING: OKOSCHI DENJIRO, FUJITA SUSUMU, TSUKIGATA RYUNOSUKE
Akira Kurosawa admitted in his autobiography that he didn't put his full effort into SANSHIRO SUGATA Part 2, a film he was pressured into making by the Japanese government. Due to its anti-American content, this film was never released in the US.
The tale of Sugata Sanshiro continues! Sugata again grows as a Judo Master, and demonstrates his (and by extension, all Japanese) superiority to the foreign warrior. Sugata and Yano have established the dominance of Judo over Jujitsu by defeating all comers, but Sugata is not satisfied. He is the best Judo practitioner in the land, but is plagued by his victories and is not sleeping well. Sugata is also facing competition from Boxing, Karate, and Gennosuke Higaki's brothers, Teshin and Genzaburo Higaki.
As the film was made at the end of World War II, it not surprisingly contains scenes in which Westerners are made to appear extraordinarily piggish and vulgar.
