Tale of a Golden Geisha
aka: Agemen
Director: Juzo Itami
Cast: Nobuko Miyamoto, Masahiko Tsugawa, Hiroshi Ôkôchi, Ryunosuke Kaneda
Nayoko was a abandoned girl and brought up by an elderly couple. Nayoko (Nobuko Miyamoto) is an "a-ge-man" or "golden geisha," whose mere presence confers success on whoever holds her contract. Strangely the men who get emotionally involved with Nayoko raise their fortune. Some politicians have their eye on her as Lady Luck.Over the years a number of men bid for or sell her contract, until it is bought by the one man who truly loves her.
The film stars two of Itami's regular actors, Nobuko Miyamoto as a geisha who brings luck to the men with whom she sleeps, and Masahiko Tsugawa as her unfaithful, sometimes partner. As well as showing her relationships with the man she loves and the men who employ her, it satirizes corruption and the influence of money in Japanese politics.
Ageman was nominated for four Japanese Academy Awards - Best Director (Juzo Itami), Best Actress (Nobuko Miyamoto), Best Screenplay (Juzo Itami) and Best Editing (Akira Suzuki).
