Here is another instance of the same material being adapted multiple times — both in live-action and in animation. The original story is Hundred Stories by Natsuhiko Kyogoku.
The scene is set in the Bakumatsu age, when the founations of the Tokugawa government has began to sway. In the age where "Darknesss" breathed and the existence of monsters were feared; an aspiring writer, Yamaoka Hyakusuke travels around the countries hoping to publish to the world his "Hyaku Monogatari".
Along the way he runs into three low-lifes — the monk Mataichi (Atsuro Watabe), Ogin of the Puppets; and the grimy Chouji of the Bird Callling.
The plot involves a man who allegedly died years ago and has since come back as a ghost to haunt others, although that may be all a setup to exploit the superstitions of others as part of a revenge plot.
They are secretive gang, hired to solve cases that are buried in darkness. Searching out the criminal, using skilfull contrivances, they judge the human ego and bury one job after another; along with a mysterious sound of ringing bells and the world "Go Koui Tatematsuru"
