During the early days of the American occupation, just after Japan's defeat in WWII. A group of prostitutes live and work in the basement of a bombed-out building, governing themselves with a strict code of conduct.
Anyone who breaks the rules - particularly the rule forbidding sex without pay - is brutally tortured and banished.
The women solidarity begins to collapse when they shelter a wounded man - each of whom to claim for herself.
